Sintra Getting there & around

Getting around

Car & motorcycle

Taxi & car

Taxis are available at the train station or opposite the Sintra-Vila post office. They aren’t metered, so check fares with the turismo. Count on about €8 one way to Palácio Nacional da Pena, or €16 return to Convento dos Capuchos. There’s a 20% supplement at weekends and on holidays.

There’s a free car park below Sintra-Vila; follow the signs by the câmara municipal (town hall), in Estefânia. Alternatively, park at Portela Interface and take the bus.

Bus & tram

Bus

From the station, it’s a 1.5km scenic walk into Sintra Vila – a good way to get your bearings – or you can hop on a bus. Bus 433 runs regularly from Portela Interface to São Pedro (Largo 1 Dez on timetables; €0.80, 15 minutes, at least half-hourly 7am to 8pm) via Estefânia and Sintra-Vila. To get to Palácio Nacional da Pena (€3.85, 15 minutes), catch bus 434, which starts from Sintra train station and goes via Sintra-Vila (every 20 to 40 minutes, from 9.35am to 6.05pm). The last one from Pena returns at 6.20pm.

For €8.50 you can buy a Day Rover, valid on all Scotturb bus routes, including the Pena service.

A one-day Train & Bus Travelcard (€12) is valid on LisbonCascais and Lisbon–Sintra trains and all Scotturb buses. Ticket kiosks are at Portela Interface (near the car park) and opposite Sintra train station.

You can hire bikes at Caminho do Castelo (Rua Consiglieri Pedroso 15; 10am-7pm).
