Lonely Planet review for Páteo do Garrett

Don’t be put off by the rustic-meets-kitsch decor; the major draw here is the patio, shaded by a huge plane tree and affording far-reaching views over Sintra’s rooftops. Home-cooked classics include spicy black sausage and garlicky clams with coriander.

Ripped off by the fat waiter that works there

    jms1974 does not recommend this,

Came into this place after a fair bit of hunting around for a place that suited me. I selected this one for a) the patio, and b) the nice selection of dishes on the menu posted outside.

I was seated by the fat waiter next to a garbage can. He kept me waiting for quite some time, not presenting me with a menu to check out.

I had my Lonely Planet with me, and before saying hello, he peaked over to see what language I spoke. I asked him to see the menu, and he told me that the menu did not apply. I had a choice of 4 barbecued fishes. This seemed a bit strange, but I didn't question him. He listed off the fishes, without telling me prices. I asked how much the sea bass was, and it was 13 Euro - more than ANY of the mains on the printed menu. I was very tired, didn't feel like getting up, finding a new place. So, I took the sea bass. He also offered me a salad. I had just assumed it was a small, affordable salad, so I accepted.

The fish came with potatoes, and veggies, and while it was OK, I was shocked at the bill when all was said and done. The salad was 7 Euros, tack on a water, and the mean was 22 Euros. FAR too much.

I put blame on myself for being too passive, trusting, and not asking enough questions of this waiter. I didn't want to seem like a pain in the butt. I told off the waiter as I paid him, saying that it's not right to take advantage of trusting tourists. I told him I came because they posted a menu outside, with some affordable dishes - which wasn't the truth.
