Viewpoint (Or Lookout) sights in Lisbon

  1. A

    Elevador de Santa Justa

If the lanky, wrought-iron Elevador de Santa Justa seems uncannily familiar, it’s probably because the neo-Gothic marvel is the handiwork of Raul Mésnier, Gustave Eiffel’s apprentice. It’s Lisbon’s only vertical street lift. Get there early to beat the crowds and zoom to the top for sweeping views over the city’s skyline.

  2. B

    Miradouro de Santa Catarina

Guitar-strumming teens, pot-smoking students, penniless artists…all sorts convene at this viewpoint, affording sweeping views to the river and Ponte 25 de Abril. Look for the scowling Adamastor, poet Luís de Camões’ mythological sea phantom.

  3. C

    Elevador da Bica

Arthritically creaking up the chasmlike Rua da Bica de Duarte Belo, this iconic yellow funicular is a flashback to the late 19th century. Hitch a ride to save your legs and enjoy fleeting glimpses of the Rio Tejo and pastel-hued houses.

    Elevador da Glória

From Praça dos Restauradores, the Elevador da Glória climbs up to a superb viewpoint atop one of Lisbon's seven hills, Miradouro de São Pedro de Alcântara, and is a less tiring way of getting to Bairro Alto.
