At its centre rises gallant King João I, once celebrated for his 15th-century discoveries in Africa, now targeted by pigeons and gravity-defying skateboarders – that’s justice for you. Take a seat at one of the pavement cafes for cake, sunshine and perfect snapshots of Castelo de São Jorge.
