Lonely Planet review for El Rei D’frango

Grill goddesses Luciana and Carla rustle up enormous and delicious portions of salmon and febras (sautéed pork strips) for pocket money. You’ll roll down the cobbles after eating at this simple local haunt.

Honest, tasty food with a smile for next to nothing

    mollydub recommends this,

We went to El Rei D'frango for a last Lisbon meal at lunchtime on a Monday in late January. Tucked away behind Rossio railway station in a characterful street at the top of a flight of steps, we found a tiny restaurant half full with locals tucking in to massive plates of food with gusto. The short menu was translated into a number of languages, including English (handy as our Portuguese is limited to a few words). The eponymous frango was nowhere to be seen on a menu of fish, pork and steak dishes but the pervasive aroma of pork was mouthwatering so we dived in...... two enormous plates of pork (one on the bone, one of thin slices) overflowing with fried rice and thin chips (fries) arrived and we summoned all of our gustatory energy for what was the dining equivalent of climbing the hills of Lisbon! The food was honest, tasty and filling beyond belief. It was cooked to order and served by two friendly and good-humoured women who sat down to enjoy their own lunch and a TV soap opera, while keeping an attentive eye on our progress. Finishing with almost empty plates, we ordered the usual bicas and wondered if we would ever need to eat again..... Our total bill for two plates of pork, rice and fries, two mixed salads (we had assumed that the cheapness of the main dishes meant small portions.... how wrong we were), two bottles of water and two coffees came to princely €18! This has to be one of the best deals in Lisbon - excellent for our budget, sooooo bad for our diets but who cares??!! With a tip and a friendly farewell, we virtually rolled our way back down the street....... A highly recommended, down-to-earth and enjoyable Lisbon dining experience.
