Honeymooners and hopeless romantics flock to this lemon-fronted mansion, sitting pretty next to hilltop Castelo de São Jorge. Unwind by the courtyard fountain, get some quality shut-eye in your plush room and be the first at the castle in the morning.

Sleek and intimate, this 18th-century mansion is the stuff of pure fairytale. The serene inner courtyard feels a zillion miles away from the castle's camera-toting masses with its gurgling fountain and clipped box hedges. Portuguese interior designer Graça Viterbo has put her funky stamp on the boutique hotel's 14 rooms, the result: country retreat meets 21st-century slicker, with earthy tones, antique furnishings and exposed stone. The hotel's diminutive size means the affable staff knows guests by name. When the sun shines, take a table in the courtyard for breakfast.
