OK, so this prefab hotel is no pretty face, but it is personality that counts and Jorge V delivers with a superb location near Avenida da Liberdade, cheery staff and far-reaching views from many of its comfy, good-value rooms.

Don't be put off by first impressions. Behind the nondescript concrete façade lies a perfectly decent hotel with a great location, helpful staff and an attractive bar. Rooms in neutral colours are nothing flash, but they are quiet, spacious and equipped with three-star creature comforts like internet access, minibars, cable TV and air-con. Around half have balconies affording terrific views across Baixa to Castelo de São Jorge. Book well ahead to secure one of them. Get up with the lark to skip the anaconda of a queue at breakfast.
