Things to do in Pszczyna

  1. Tyskie Browary Książęce

The town of Tychy has been famous for its beer for four centuries, and a tour of the Tyskie Browary Książęce is well worth a stopover. The tours last about 2½ hours and include a visit to the Tychy Brewing Museum (Tyskie Museum Piwowarstwa) and, of course, a beer tasting in the pub. They are free and conducted in six languages, including English, but you should book in advance by phone or email.

    Rynek

The castle gives on to the elongated and leafy Rynek, lined with old burghers' houses dating mostly from the 18th and 19th centuries. On its northern side is the Protestant church and, next to it at No 2, the town hall, both remodelled early this century. Behind the town hall is the 14th-century parish church, extensively rebuilt over the years, with a typically lavish interior featuring a ceiling painting of the Ascension.

    Castle Museum

The castle houses the Castle Museum, with about a dozen rooms open over three floors. Those wanting more detailed information should pick up a copy of the English-language guidebook The Castle Museum in Pszczyna (14zł) from the ticket office.

    Café U Telemana

Located in the courtyard of the castle, this is a good pit stop for a drink or a snack after viewing the castle. The café is named after 18th-century composer Georg Philip Telemann (1681–1767), who lived here for four years in the early 18th century.

    Pszczyna Farm Village

A five-minute walk east of the Rynek is the small but interesting Pszczyna Farm Village, a small but interesting skansen with half a dozen 200-year-old timber houses – including a mill, smithy and barn – collected from the region.

    Cukierna Niedżbała

Probably Pszczyna’s best bakery (judging from the queues) and famous for its poppy-seed pastries.

    Kasztelańska

This pub is a bit more relaxed than the places on the Rynek and makes a good spot for a leisurely beer.

Set in a historic townhouse dating from 1756, this long-established family restaurant has a solid range of old-fashioned Polish food and is hugely popular for it.
