House of Copernicus information
As is often the case with ‘birthplaces’ in Central and Eastern Europe, local Toruń historians often lock horns over the issue of whether Copernicus was actually born in this red-brick mansion. This, and a lack of English captioning, rather takes the oomph out of the Regional Museum’s second-biggest attraction, which is torn between displays of old furniture, astronomy and Copernicus’ life story. More engaging, if ridiculously overpriced, is its short audiovisual presentation (adult/concession 12/7zł) regarding Copernicus’ times in Toruń, with a model of the town during that period. There are soundtracks in several languages, English included.
The third element of the museum is the extravagantly titled World of Toruń’s Gingerbread (Świat Toruńskiego Piernika; adult/concession 10/6zł), which offers insights into the arcane art of pierniki creation. Visitors are guided by a costumed medieval townsperson and given the chance to bake their own.
