Introducing Nowy Targ
One of the region’s oldest settlements, Nowy Targ started life at the foot of the Tatras in the early 13th century. Little of its old architecture survived the 1784 conflagration that all but reduced the town to ashes. Located at the confluence of the Czarny (Black) and Biały (White) Dunajec Rivers, ‘New Market’ is a busy commercial town and a transport hub on the crossroads between the Tatra, Gorce, Pieniny, Spisz and Orawa ranges.

The town is a possible jumping-off point for travellers wanting to get to the surrounding countryside, though accommodation offerings are poor and there’s very little to detain you. You’ll find a better selection of lodging options – and a whole lot more to see and do – in Zakopane to the south and even Szczawnica to the east.
