Introducing Paradise Cave

If you haven’t seen caves before, you’ll enjoy Paradise Cave (Jaskinia Raj; 041 346 5518; www.lysogory.com.pl; tours 10zł; 10am-5pm Tue-Sun May-Aug, 10am-4pm Tue-Sun Mar, Apr & Sep-Nov). However, if you are an experienced spelunker, then a visit to Paradise Cave may be only marginally more thrilling than exploring your garage with a torch in winter.

The paved path through the cave makes for a sanitised 180m loop. The cave is only 8m at its highest point, but some of the larger chambers are truly impressive, not so much for the size of the stalactites but for their sheer density – as many as 200 per square metre.

The 40-minute tours (leaving every 15 minutes or so) are only conducted in Polish. Independent visitors must call in advance to reserve their place.

The entrance building shelters a small cafeteria, and a display depicting the use of the cave by primitive humans before they were required to make telephone bookings.

Beside the car park for the cave, Zazard Raj (041 346 5127; Dobrzączka 26-060 Chęciny; s/d/q 90/120/200zł) is a wholesome place to stay (and eat) with little around it other than the caves.
