Lonely Planet review

The Grand Hotel: the name evokes elegance, eminence and, well, grandeur, all of which are embodied in this historic institution. The 19th-century building, once the palace of Princess Izabela Czartoryska (or Czartoryski museum fame), is now one of Krakow's finest hotels, hosting the likes of Lech Wałęsa and George Bush.

The 56 rooms at the Grand are individually decorated, many with antique furnishings and fine artwork and tapestries. They feature fantastic high ceilings, shiny hardwood floors and double-paned windows to keep out the noise from the busy street below. Bathrooms are showcases for semi-precious stones, which frame the mirrors and line the countertops. If you do stay here, take a tour to examine the artistry of the place: an exquisite stained-glass masterpiece graces every floor; check out the restaurant, with its bright stained-glass ceiling. And end your tour in the cafe where Joseph Conrad used to seek inspiration and coffee. You may not wish to leave the luxury of this hotel, but when you do, you are steps from Krakow's Main Square, and the many bars, restaurants, museums and churches all packed into the streets of the Old Town.
