Things to do in Lesko

  1. Greenway Bicycle Trail

The region around the Bieszczady (byesh-chah-di), in the far SW corner of Poland and sandwiched between Ukraine and Slovakia, is one of thick forests and open meadows. Scantily populated and largely unspoilt, it's one of the most attractive areas of the country. One of the most exciting developments in recent years is the completion of the 350km bicycle loop known as the Greenway Bicycle Trail, which links the Bieszczady towns of Sanok, Lesko, Ustrzyki Dolne and Solina before crossing into Ukraine, Slovakia and back into Poland.

  2. Jewish Cemetery

From the synagogue, follow ul Moniuszki north (and downhill); the stairs on the right lead up to the old Jewish Cemetery. More than 2000 gravestones, the oldest one dating back to the mid-16th century, are scattered amid trees and ever-consuming ivy, in varying stages of decay. Some of them miraculously retain their rich decoration; others have been defaced.

  3. Synagogue

Built in the Mannerist style in the mid-18th century, the synagogue has an attached tower – a dead giveaway that it was once part of the town’s fortifications. Little of the temple’s original decoration has survived. The interior houses the Synagogue Art Gallery.

  4. Synagogue Art Gallery

The Synagogue Art Gallery is supposed to showcase artists from the Bieszczady. In the porch is a list of towns and shtetls in the region with Jewish populations of more than 100, a poignant reminder of what the make-up of the region was before the German murderers arrived.

  5. Parish Church of Our Lady

Just west of the synagogue is the Parish Church of Our Lady. It was built in 1539 and its exterior still retains many Gothic features, including the eastern portal. The freestanding Baroque bell tower was added in the mid-18th century.
