Lonely Planet review for Forest House

Unbeatable mountain setting, but wildly inconsistent food.

Great dining with an atmosphere to match!

Rated one of the best restaurants in the Philippines, this bistro has never failed in giving us a great dining experience.

Our latest visit was during the hectic holidays and even if we didn't have a reservation, the excellent service of their staff didn't fail to get us a table before dinnertime ended! Our server was comically perky and greatly hospitable. The place was all decked out the usual log cabin became a "Christmas Lodge" of sorts, aesthetically pleasing in every way.

We began our meal with pumpkin soup. With just the right creaminess on the tasty pumpkin flavor, it warms one up for what's next. Our appetizer was gambas al ajillo, and in contrast to the comforting appeal of the soup, this dish is just tasty! Our second appetizer was the Bagnet (Ilocos Pork Belly) a sinful treat of crispy, crunchy, well seasoned pork belly on a pool of their own special sauce (I assume it's soy sauce with a little something else) and a side of deep fried tofu squares.

The main meal was kare-kare, a peanut sauce based dish with various local vegetables. usually it would have ox tail in it, but the forest house version could be described as unique and "healthy". It was seafood kare-kare! The dish now had fillets of fish, squid rings, peeled shrimps, and mussels rather than ox. The great part about it, you wouldn't even think of missing the ox! It's that good, honestly!

Forest House has a selection of drinks to wash all the good stuff down, including some wines and champagnes, but since I'm a minor, I can't really comment... Although they have an excellent menu of coffees, teas, and chocolates, if you're looking for a nice warm cup!

Overall, Forest House Bistro, is an excellent place to dine. If you're looking for great food and a cozy atmosphere, a place for family time or couples only, this would be a great choice. I totally recommend it!
