Explore one of world's deepest canyons and the 'white city' of Arequipa

Arequipa is the home of the beautiful Santa Catalina Convent and the gateway to one of the world's deepest canyons, the Colca. Explore the Colca, which is twice the depth of the Grand Canyon and we hope to view the huge Andean Condor soaring in the early morning thermals overhead.

Highlights

  • Tour of Arequipa
  • Spectacular views of Colca Canyon
  • Visit the deepest canyon in the world

Itinerary

Day 1 Arrive in Arequipa

Upon arrival into Arequipa, you will be met and driven to the hotel. The city is known as the white city because of the lovely pale volcanic rock that is used for many of its buildings. The afternoon is free to wander this interesting city.

Day 2 Arequipa to Colca Canyon

After an early breakfast we board our private vehicle for a spectacular drive past the perfect cone shaped Mount Misti. At 5822m this towering volcano provides a spectacular backdrop to the city of Arequipa. We ascend around the back of Misti to the dry semi-desert where we often see herds of wild vicuña and cross a high pass before an immediate and spectacular descent into the canyon to Chivay. We spend the rest of the day visiting parts of this massive canyon – which is arguably the deepest in the world!

Day 3 At Colca and return to Arequipa

An early start to go visit the famous Condors Nest where we get a chance to see these magnificent birds (the heaviest flying bird in the world) gliding below and above us. After a last look at the Colca area we depart for the drive back to Arequipa.

Day 4 Morning sightseeing tour, trip concludes in Arequipa

This morning we enjoy a half day guided tour of the city and the famous Santa Catalina Convent which is one of Peru’s most fascinating colonial religious buildings. Following your morning tour, you have the option to transfer to the airport, where services conclude.

    Great trip...shame about the company!

    queenie_88 does not recommend this,

We booked our 2 day 2 night trip with Escandinavia Travel and Adventure (they are right on the Plaza del Armas in Arequipa - Portal San Agustin 131 Int. "B" Cercado, Arequipa).

The trek was pretty gruelling especially going down...but the scenery was amazing and we saw Condors. The accommodation at the bottom was pretty basic but the food wasn't too bad. Our guide was quite distracted as he was ill but he was ok.

The problem was the tour company. When we returned we had booked busses with them to La Paz. We got from Arequipa to Puno fine...but in Puno no-one was waiting for us as they had promised and we hadn't been booked onto any bus! We tried calling but the number was disconnected. I did manage to email them and they have since replied saying that they are not prepared to refund us a penny. We wasted 2 hours waiting at that bus station and then had to pay to get on the local busses to La Paz as all others were full. We had also paid a huge amount for the bus which we never got to catch.

We think it’s awful that a supposedly reputable company would do this and we would urge everyone to avoid ESCANDINAVIA TRAVEL AND ADVENTURE!
