Whether you’re shopping for souvenirs or just want to take in the local culture, a browse through a Peruvian market is a must. From religious dioramas and boldly-patterned pottery to startlingly fresh fruit and unlucky livestock, you can find just about everything crammed into these bustling open-air markets. The highlight, though, are the extraordinary textiles, a tradition handed down from ancient cultures to today’s artisans. Skilled weavers have long produced wool and cotton rugs, blankets and clothing with elaborate designs, some with record-setting thread counts. Travellers can find finely woven textiles at crafts markets throughout the country, though the best are arguably found in Cuzco and the Sacred Valley.
