Vista al Mar
When the smell of garlic hits your nose on a Pacific sea breeze, you know you will dine well. Built into the clifftop and with its balcony dangling out over the sea, Vista al Mar is an elegant, modern restaurant serving a variety of meals and snacks. Fish and ceviche are wise options. It also does a great breakfast buffet at weekends. Watch for the occasional paraglider floating past along the cliffs.

Carpa Bruja
Cajamarca's modern antidote to old-world colonial style, this slick, modern and bright affair serves up international dishes, gourmet sandwiches (on whole-wheat ciabatta!), lots of salads and several vegetarian choices. There's a happy hour in the evening, and for dessert you'll have to go a long way to beat their specialty cheesecake.

Don Paco
Tucked away near the plaza, Don Paco has a big following among both residents and expats. There’s something for everyone here, including typical breakfasts and great renditions of Peruvian favorites, as well as a whole bunch of veggie options. The lentil burgers and quinoa (an Andean grain) salad are particularly good.

Wallpa Sua
This is an upscale, locally popular and ever-busy chicken restaurant, with a quarter-chicken and fries starting at S6 and various other meat plates (like beef-heart brochettes) available. Wallpa sua is Quechua for ‘chicken thief’ – makes you wonder where it gets its poultry supplies.

Classic Restaurant
Small, quiet and dignified, Classic Restaurant is a wonderful place to escape torrid Tumbes and relax with a long lunch, as many of the town’s better-connected locals do. The food is good and mainly coastal, but secretly we love this place for its air-con.

Astrid y Gastón
Now one of the older outposts of novoandina cooking in Lima, Gastón Acurio’s French-influenced standard-bearer nonetheless remains a culinary force to be reckoned with. His seasonal menu is equipped with traditional Peruvian fare, but it’s the exquisite fusion specialties – such as the seared filets of cuy, served Peking-style, with fluffy purple-corn crêpes – that make this such a sublime fine dining experience. There is a first-rate international wine list (from S46 per bottle).
