    Restaurant Huaca Pucllana

This sophisticated establishment overlooks the illuminated ruins at Huaca Pucllana. El Cordano

A Lima institution since 1905, this old-world dining hall has, at some point or another, counted practically every Peruvian president for the last 100 years as a customer (the presidential palace is right across the street). 4. D

    Manhattan Restaurant

This sophisticated, mellow hideaway has good menús, as well as a happy hour from 17:00 to closing time at 19:00. The tasty sopa a la criolla (mildly spiced, creamy noodle soup with beef and peppers) and the escalope pollo con verdana (chicken escalopes) make for a filling meal.

    Queirolo

Lined with wine bottles, Queirolo is popular with office workers for cheap menús (S7) featuring staples such as papa rellena (stuffed potatoes). It is also popular for evening gatherings, when locals pop in for chilcano de pisco (pisco with ginger ale and lime juice) and chit-chat.

    La Tranquera

An Argentine-influenced recommendation for meat, meat and more meat is this 30-year-old favorite. It serves a parrillada (grilled meats) that supposedly serves five, but looks more fit for 10. There's also a special selection of meats, such as cuy (guinea pig) rabbit and game.

    Alfresco

Part of a well-known and well-appreciated restaurant chain, this quality eatery is presided over by chef Alfredo Aramburú Picasso. With a name like that you'd expect his food to be artwork - and it is. The fish creations are quite stunning; try the charcoal fillet of sea bream.

This high-class restaurant takes an intimate atmosphere to another level with tables in private booths, each carefully decorated with antique touches. It serves a limited menu of typical Peruvian food. You'll know you've arrived when you see the outdoor hamaca (hammock).

    Las Brujas de Cachiche

A good place for quality Peruvian cooking, the menu has all the popular dishes (such as ají de gallina ), as well as lesser-known specialties such as carapulcra, a dried potato stew. Want to try a bit of everything? Hit the lunch buffet (S75).

    Las Mesitas

A vintage spot with terra-cotta-tile floors that serves cheap Peruvian classics and an array of recommended desserts. If you’ve been thinking about dipping into suspiro limeño (a caramel-meringue sweet), this would be the place to do it.

    La Merced

Bustling with business people at lunchtime, the bland, unsigned exterior gives little clue to the gorgeous baroque wood ceiling inside. The menu is long on traditional dishes; at busy times you may have to wait for a table.
