Lonely Planet review

This elegant upper-class limeño mainstay has Cordon Bleu-trained chefs who create excellent international food. Dishes to watch out for are tuna tiradito (Japanese-influenced ceviche, served in thin slices without onion), veal osso buco and Piuran groper. Owner Gastón Acurio is quite a culinary media personality in his own right and has been the capital's flavor of the month, after month, after month.

I arrived eagerly and expectantly at Astrid y Gaston as they opened the door for lunch and was the last one to leave four hours later after savouring every delicious morsel and really relaxing in the unhurried ambience. The restaurant has lovely natural light and the décor has a kind of rustic chic with the walls adorned with well chosen artwork. The waiters were welcoming, friendly and very helpful and their service was spot on and totally unpretentious (despite my worn jeans and battered day pack). To kick things off I ordered a sublime apple martini after which for my entrada I had a delicious Causa Limeña atopped with the tiniest halved sweet tomatoes and boiled eggs - both with the diameter of no more than a penny! I often find the quality of a restaurant’s bread is a good indication of its standards and A & G’s bread was some of the freshest and tastiest I‘ve ever had the pleasure of trying to stop myself from wolfing down. For my main I had black cod on a potato puree with a delicious teriyaki-type sauce. The cod was seasoned and cooked to perfection as was the vegetable side dish I requested (despite not being on the menu). All was washed down with a fabulous crisp but not too dry Cab Sauv recommended to me by my waiter. My dessert El Sauco came presented in a sundae glass and consisted of strawberries in cassis, underneath which was a layer of mascarpone which sat on a layer of delicious crushed biscuits. It was amazing! To round things off I took an Irish coffee in the bar area where I continued reading my novel. At that point I hadn’t noticed but the restaurant had actually closed and the door was locked but even so I was still left in peace. To sum, I can’t recommend this restaurant highly enough! In the often to be honest dull and grey Lima (largely due to its omnipresent low cloud) it’s comforting to know there are restaurants as great as Astrid y Gaston in which to make your stay in Lima very much more palatable.
