Lonely Planet review for California Café
Run by Tim, from California no less, this hip pad does breakfasts at any time, plus light lunches and salads – it’s a funky, chilled space to while away many hours. You can spend the day listening to the sublime world music collection or reading one of the hundreds of books available for exchange. Wi-fi is a godsend to laptop junkies and rich espressos and dozens of herbal teas will keep you sipping till closing time. Tim is active in the development of ecotourism in the Cordillera Huayhuash and is a goldmine of information on that area. He organizes ‘ultimate Frisbee’ games every Friday.

THE breakfast place in Huaraz (any time of day)!

He folks!
I left Huaraz about 3 weeks ago and am STILL craving the breakfast selection at California Cafe...
Their all day breakfasts although not cheap are totally worth every sol you spend! I'd recommend the Tim & Byron Special!!!
As mentioned by previous posters, this place has a bunch of other stuff to trap you there, hours whizzing by, such as DVDs, books, wifi & (personally) a great selection of 60s & 70s rock music!
Their sandwiches and pineapple & orange juices are also a total dream!!!
Enjoy!!!

Amazing!!
sweetforcertain recommends this,
Absolutely wonderful!! Coffee is fantastic, food is delicious, book selection is extensive, couches are comfortable, and the staff is wonderful! Highly recommend a visit.....the only problem is it's hard to leave; much too easy to spend the whole day there!! (oh and there is a great dvd collection in the back.....like I said it's way too easy to get stuck there all day!)

yummy yogurt and healing helpers
mountaindancing recommends this,
I had dysentery in Huaraz and could not get out much, but I could spend all day long in the California Cafe with a liter of healing herbal tea and delicious homemade yogurt and wholegrain bread! The quality of the food was outstanding and the prices were very reasonable. The music, the books, the staff, the couches, and clean functional bathroom all combine to create a tranquilo haven to recover from serious illness or an intense hike in the big mtns... Also big thanks to Toby who was running the cafe at the time, for the great contacts and info on jungle travel as well as a mini healing session in the cafe.
