Lonely Planet review for Cusco Planetarium
Cusco Planetarium is a nifty way to learn more about the Inca worldview. It was the only culture in the world to define constellations of darkness as well as light, and studied astronomy seriously: some of Cuzco’s main streets are designed to align with the stars at certain times of year. Recommended before you go on a trek – you’ll feel clever pointing out the Black Llama to your fellow hikers. Reservations essential; price varies with group size, and includes pickup and drop-off.

An excellent combination of history and astronomy

As an astrophysicist, I was incredibly impressed with the facilities that the planetarium had-- without any external funding, they managed to build a planetarium bigger than my former university's, and had several telescopes set up for outside observing. It was much more than just a planetarium show, with a detailed background of Incan astronomy and its uses both inside and outside of the dome, along with the night-time observations of several planets and deep sky objects. They also were able to schedule an affordable private show for two people (as we were there during a time with few tourists); they are also bilingual, for non-Spanish speakers like myself. This institute provides a much needed introduction to cultural astronomy and acknowledgement of the wonderful contributions of the Incas to the field.

Great way to learn Inca astronomy, Southern sky before trek

Lots of good info, a family run operation that is very energetic, enthusiastic, well informed. They pick you up in town and take you back, so you don´t have to find it in the dark. Great info to help you think about Inca worldview and the Southern Hemisphere sky before you´re out in the mountains. They will adapt their talks to different languages and audience, including children. Well worth a visit.
