Street touts and self-styled jungle guides tend to be aggressive, and many are both irritatingly insistent and dishonest. They are working for commissions. It is best to make your own decisions by contacting hotels, lodges and tour companies directly. Petty thieving is common by opportunist young children who roam the streets looking for easy prey. That said, violent crime is almost unknown in Iquitos.
