Get A Passport

Confused about the new Passport requirements? Fear not, it's easier than you think!

Under the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI), new US travel regulations went into effect on January 23, 2007. Find out all the details and current information here.

Note that due to the recent changes, passport processing times have increased with the high volume of applications. See more information and processing times here.

Because the US governmental regulations and procedures will continue to change, it's best to start by contacting the US Department of State Consular Section (877-487-2778, TDD/TTY 888-874-7793). Their website contains information on how to renew, replace or apply for a passport plus you can check the status of your application online once you have sent it in. It also contains details on visa requirements, health conditions, minor political disturbances, unusual currency regulations, and crime and security information for every country in the world. Always check for recent public announcements when planning trips.

After you know the facts, in 5 simple steps, you can be on your way to discover the world.

  1. You need to fill out a passport application form. These are available at any passport agency or acceptance facility or you can download them off the Consular Affairs website.
  2. Say cheese! You must submit two, recent, identical, professional color photos. Various other requirements apply.

You can also check out the Lonely Planet Passport Month events to see if we'll be in your area soon - at many events we're taking free passport pictures - a great way to start the process, and save a few dollars at the same time.

  3. Application fees may change, but for an adult passport valid for 10 years, you'll currently pay $97 total.

Seem like a lot? If you break down the cost over the passport's 10-year lifespan, it's less than 3 cents per day!

  4. Apply in person at one of more than 8000 facilities across the country, including some post offices. Find the one nearest you.
  5. Hurry up and wait. Passport processing times have increased due to the high volume of applications. It currently takes about ten to twelve weeks for routine processing of your passport application once it arrives at the passport agency. Expedited service, which costs $60 extra, takes about three to four weeks door-to-door. Once submitted you can check the status of your application through the National Passport Information Center.

TRAVEL TIP: Though many countries do not require entry visas if you intend to depart within a specific timeframe (usually two weeks to six months), remember to always double-check whether a visa is required for your travel destination(s)! The US Department of State website details foreign entry requirements in its helpful consular information sheets. Embassies of the country or countries you plan to visit can tell you how to apply for one and how much it will cost. For warnings about travel to particular regions check with your nearest embassy or consulate.

"I think National Passport Month is a much-needed and timely effort. As someone who didn't own a passport or leave the country until he was 25, I know what a mind-expanding experience international travel can be."
