Vanimo has some of the best surf in PNG, and it’s one of the main reasons why people visit this town. The surf is seasonal, from October through to April, when monsoon swells bring waves between 1m and 2m.
Most surfers head straight to Lido , a small village on the headland 6km from Vanimo and the home of the local board-riding clubs – Sunset Surf Club and Vanimo Surf Club – as well as the Vanimo Surf Lodge, the organisation that collects the SAMP fees.
Lido has two excellent reef breaks (a right and a left) and gets consistently good surf. Five minutes up the coast at Warimo Village there are two lefties and two righties – both reef breaks, and further along at Yako Village there’s a fast hollow left.
There’s no surf rage in PNG and the scene is just in its infancy. Generally it’s BYO boards but Vanimo Surf Lodge may be able to sort you out.
