Lonely Planet review for Sohano Island
You can also take a boat ride to explore the idyllic islands near the southern mouth of the passage and beyond. Good swimming spots are on these islands. The most easily accessible is Sohano Island, a few minutes by boat from Buka. It was the provincial capital from WWII until 1960. It's a beautiful place with lawns and gardens, a Japanese monument, and war relics, steep craggy cliffs and panoramic views over town, the passage and Bougainville Island. There are some colonial-period buildings.

Great de-stresser with touches of history.

Sohano is about 15 minutes banana boat ride from Buka over pristine waters. Buka is connected by air from all the major towns in Papua New Guinea. The boatman told me there is a WW II place wreck at the ocean bottom and circled around for it . Didn't find it in the end. Good place to spend a day/half-day out but carry your own water and sandwiches. Island has a an WW II wreck but no details available. Not being an aircraft expert, have no clue as to whether it belonged to the allies or the Japanese.
