I want to try the banana boat from Bougainville to the Solomon Islands in a couple of months, and I know there are. A few people who've done it. It seems fairly straightforward - trying not to jinx it - but I've found a bit of a formal hurdle before I even get close to Buin or any other place on Bougainville: entering the country.
I can get visa on arrival at Port Moresby, but the consulate in Sydney told me I'll need a return flight or similar proof that I'm leaving the country. The boat…

It’s hard to describe how wonderful my Sepik experience was and it’s something that I will remember for the rest of my life. I was lucky enough to spend 6 days with the most reliable, passionate, honest, kind Sepik guide one could ever find: Johannes Teven from Ambunti. The first day he told me “As long as you’re happy, I’m happy”, he really meant that and during all my experience he made me feel safe, looked after, joyful. I called him once I got to Port Moresby and in one day he arranged his…
I am considering a trip to Papua New Guinea. I would like to do the sepik river and the Solomon Islands. I see that March is low season/rainy in PNG? Has anyone advice on travel to PNG in March or have you heard about whether travel there is viable during the last two weeks of March and the first week in April.? Thank you for your insights on this subject.
Most gratefully yours,
I crossed to PNG from Jayapura,a taxi taking you to the border and back will set you back 600000 rupees, that's what i've paid for, when i've arrived the border was shut,i was told the officer packed up and left cause he didn't get his christmas allowance, and the border was shut on 25th and 26th as well! Most people from PNG just use the road around the border post that goes through the forest, they go buy cheap goods on the indonesian side and then head back.
After talking to the soldier at…
The new LP Guidebook for Papua New Guinea is out in the bookshops and available in an electronic format from this website.
It was published in December 2016 and has 260 pages.
Has anybody flew to Haia, Herowana and Maimafu villages via The Research & Conservation Foundation Transit House in Goroka, advised by LP? Is it worth flying there, if I want to hike offbeaten trek?
We will be in Goroka around Jan 5, 2017 and would like it try it out.
I saw 1 pic of Maimafu airstrip in Google maps done in mid-2016. It means that people still get there..
Many thanks and regards!
