Lonely Planet review for memorial to Christopher Robinson
The main thing to do on Samarai is just wander around soaking up the faded-glory. From the wharf, head toward the hill and, at the northeast corner of the sportsground, you'll pass the memorial to Christopher Robinson, the one-time administrator who committed suicide in 1904. The inscription notes he was 'as well meaning as he was unfortunate and as kindly as he was courageous' and that 'his aim was to make New Guinea a good place for white men.'
Near the southeast corner of the grounds, a road leads up to the abandoned hospital and, just north of here, a small hill with great views of the island and China Strait. Near the sportsground, and south of the wharf is Samarai's oldest-surviving building, the Anglican church.

Christopher Robinson Memorial
jamesdevere does not recommend this,
The Memorial stands about two meters tall. It is a traditional obelisk raised by the administrators of the island after the tragic death of this great man.
There was an attempt in the eighties to topple the memorial - apparently by some who felt the inscription biased - thankfully, I believe it is still standing and is an interesting part of the history.
Samarai is worth a visit. It has an island of Dr. Moreau feel to it. As you head West from the memorial, past the Trade Store, to the Wharf and then turn left, there is a pearl culture laboratory.
Inside the lab is possibly the most high tech breeding for pearl oysters I have seen. This is quite incredible, as you would not expect such a high tech industry to exist in a place that looks so run-down.
You may also wish to snorkle aroung Samarai . The reefs are still in quite good condition and provide a pleasant activity. The island is tiny, so be prepared to stay for just a day or two. Go on the weekend as it has an excellent market. every Saturday. The Anglican Church is also well worth a snap.
I stayed on Samarai for two weeks and really enjoyed it. There is accommodation above the Trade Store which is a big two bedroom apartment. It overlooks the China Strait, has a modern kitchen and two bedrooms (2004).
You might be able to stay there if it is still available. Everyone was really friendly.
