  1. AIRES, LAN and Flights To and From Colombia

Blog: Viva Latin America! - 3 January 2012

One of the big questions which arises with all travellers between Central and South America involves… well, getting between Central and South America.  Making that leap.  As previously mentioned, I hadn’t thought further ahead than Mexico when I started travelling from the top of Central America downwards, and realising in Nicaragua that it wasn’t going [...]

  2. The Unique Sights and Experiences of Panama

Blog: The Road Chose Me - 50,000kms of ebb and flow - 3 April 2011

While I’m still working on selling my Jeep I want to mention a new hangout for overlanders on the road in Panama City. Panama Passage is a new Overlander Resource Center, providing absolutely everything we could possibly need. And more. Beautiful hotel rooms, camping space, a locked yard for parking, a workshop and tools and [...]

  4. Our Panama Highlights

Blog: Never Ending Voyage - 24 March 2011

We only spent 2.5 weeks in Panama and due to illness, travel fatigue and the relatively high travel costs we didn’t explore very much. We even missed the Panama Canal! We do have a few highlights to share though. Casco Viejo We were both struck with bad colds during our five days in Panama City [...]

  5. Transiting the Panama Canal

Blog: Viva Latin America! - 20 March 2011

It is a feat of engineering that most people in the western world have heard about. As such we were definitely going to visit one of the locks in the Canal as part of our stay in Panama City. That was until we started talking to a friendly boat owner, who was giving us a [...]

  6. The Social Side to the Casco Viejo, Panama City

Blog: Viva Latin America! - 16 March 2011

In Panama, the cultural trend has been for those with increasing wealth to move to newer, more modern neighbourhoods in the city, leaving behind the poor. The result in the Casco Viejo is a badly run-down neighbourhood. Now things are changing and the actions of a few entrepreneurs and international organisations are overriding the neglectful [...]

  8. Panama City’s Casco Viejo – Part 1

Blog: Viva Latin America! - 11 March 2011

Casco Viejo is the old centre of Panama City and is split into two areas: Santa Ana and San Felipe. Most travellers stay in San Felipe which is a riot of colour and old colonial buildings with crumbling balconies and plants growing out of the cracks. As we were heading into Panama City straight off [...]

  9. San Blas Islands, Part 2 – Paradise From a Boat

Blog: Viva Latin America! - 10 March 2011

Our days in the islands were filled with snorkelling among the many reefs and swimming out to modern shipwrecks. One of those we visited had sunk only three months previously and its owner is now in prison after going slightly round-the-bend and killing a couple of people. My best sighting during the snorkelling was of [...]

  10. The Saturday City: Panama City

    Blog: Nomadic Matt's Travel Site - 12 February 2011

Often called the Miami of the South, Panama City is the capital of Panama and very much like the US city of Miami. There are high-rise condos located on the waterfront, lots of traffic, Spanish music everywhere, lots of movements, and an electric energy. But I actually found it to remind me more of Bangkok [...]

  11. Breaking News: A Healthy Plus for Panama

    Blog: Trans-Americas Journey - 2 February 2011

We just learned that the Panamanian government has signed a 12 million dollar contract to fund a radically awesome program that gives free emergency medical coverage to tourists during their first 30 days in the Central American country. Arriving visitors just need to pick up a brochure and a user card at the tourist information center in the immigration section of the Tocumen International Airport (we certainly hope they expand this program to cover travelers arriving overland like us).

  12. So Nice They Named it Twice

    Blog: Joe's Trippin' - 15 September 2010

I am no expert at this as while I am writing I am anxiously awaiting my cellphone bill from T-mobile. But I thought I’d share what I have learned thus far, as I knew absolutely nothing when I embarked on my travels. I think there was some sort of mixup. Anyway, if you have a [...]

  15. SUPER CHEAP AIRFARE ALERT: Panama City, Panama to Cartegena, Colombia for $105. #lp #travel

    Blog: Panama: Practically. - 7 April 2010

I know there are a ton of folks looking to make the trek from Panama to South America via Colombia. And its traumatic, confusing, expensive.  To be clear, its not advised that you cross the Darien Gap overland, at least not from Panama into Colombia.  Other options I have read about include catching a boat [...]

The instructors, Julio and Nelly are fabulous and if nothing else you will learn a Salsa two-step. I don’t know what their rates are, as my class was [...]

  17. 第45天:巴拿馬人,我得罪你了嗎?

Blog: Diaries of a Vagabonding Couple - 28 March 2010

    Blog: Panama: Practically. - 26 March 2010

One can catch a bus from the Allbrook Bus Terminal to anywhere . . .well anywhere in Panama. Buses to David depart regularly, every hour with a few express buses operating daily. [...]

Blog: Diaries of a Vagabonding Couple - 26 March 2010

First thing we saw at the canal - a Hong Kong container ship! When I think of Panama, the first thing that comes to mind is the canal. And today we got to marvel at this engineering wonder at work. The canal connects two oceans, facilitating global trade routes such as Asia & East Americas / Europe. Massive cargo liners carrying BMWs, Mercedes and other various goods passed before our eyes,

    Blog: Panama: Practically. - 26 March 2010

If ever you find yourself travelling through Latin America you will be wise to always be prepared with your own toilet paper. Then of course, you will probably need your own stash of baggies to dispose of said toilet paper. My preference: Flushable Moist Towelettes. Find out why after the jump. Here’s why: 1. Public Bathrooms will likely [...]

Meet the Diablo Roja. Perfect example of Panamanian personality. One of my favorite things about Panama (not including the weather and people) would be their city buses, affectionately referred to as Diablo Roja or “Red Devils”.  These buses are essentially tricked out American school buses.   Actually, they’re so tacky that they are cool to me.  The [...]
