Lonely Planet review
Here's the latest offering from the Nikko hotel group, after their Hotel Nikko Palau shut down in mysterious circumstances (apparently, ghosts were seen on the premises): they've bounced back with a resort that dazzles.
The Royal Resort is an L-shaped building that contains around 200 super-stylish rooms, all of them stuffed with hidden angles and pine-and-cream interiors. These rooms really are a treat and prove that just because you're on a Pacific island you don't have to lapse into Pacific cliché. The elegant grounds are superior, too, and feature a small, private beach with its own bar; sit out here on a deck chair with a daiquiri, looking out across the Port of Palau, and just try to have a bad time. The grounds also feature rock-strewn water features with kooky floating seating arrangements, linked by concrete waterways; at festive times, say around Christmas, little performances are put on here and food stalls are set up. A good time is had by all. There's also a classy on-site restaurant (even if it is called 'Waves'...ugh).
