    Lahore Polo Club

Flanked by well-tended green grounds, this calm and genteel club (which is almost 120 years old) is a world away from the traffic snarls of downtown Lahore. Most matches seem to be free of charge for tourists, making this an economical way of hobnobbing with the local elite either during a match or over a pot of tea at the country-clubesque polo lounge, open for both lunch and dinner. The polo season runs from around late October to late April - telephone for match details.

  2. Shandur Cup Polo Tournament

Shandur Cup Polo Tournament. The horsemanship is first rate, the reckless competitiveness of the riders is entertaining and the treatment of the horses is…well, these must be tough little ponies. The tournament dates from 1936, and has been an annual, heavily touristed event since 1989. Most sizable travel agencies in Gilgit and Chitral and a number of national agencies now have package tours, and their own Shandur encampments, for the event.

    Alhamra Arts Centre

Less than 500m east of the Avari hotel, the Alhamra has three theatre halls and is Lahore's main centre for musical, dramatic and other performing arts. Tickets for a drama performance usually cost between Rs120 and Rs300. The Centre also has short courses (around three months; advance bookings essential) in painting, tabla (drums), sitar, harmonium, guitar, violin and singing. Telephone for fee details.

  4. Salt n Pepper Village

Karachi has become quite well known for its high-end restaurants and this is a good choice for evening entertainment, as it always has live Pakistani music. Superbly situated by the sea, it's popular, so it can sometimes be hard to get a table, especially on weekends. The food receives glowing reports, the interior is smart and the ocean views are sublime.

    Capri Cinema

Because of the utter absence of bars in Karachi and the need to obtain a permit from the excise department to purchase alcohol, you may be struggling for entertainment after dark. A movie is one option; check newspapers for session details. The Capri often shows English-language films, and a few other cinemas are also scattered along the same stretch.
