Amusement Park sights in Pacific

  1. A

    Luna Park

It opened in 1912 and still retains the feel of an old-style amusement park with creepy Mr Moon's gaping mouth swallowing you up whole on entering. There's a heritage-listed scenic railway and the full complement of gut-churning modern rides. For grown-ups, the noise and lack of greenery or shade can pall all too fast. Check website for seasonal opening hours.

    Luna Park

Across the Sydney Harbour Bridge from The Rocks is this famous 1935 amusement park with its sinister chip-toothed clown entry. The park has been periodically closed by noise police in recent decades – get in now before it closes again! The Ferris Wheel, the Rotor and the Flying Saucer offer varying degrees of nerve-wrack and nausea. You can pay as you go, or buy a height-based unlimited ride pass. Extended hours during school and public holidays.

  3. C

    Rainbow’s End

It's a bit lame by international standards but Rainbow's End has enough rides (including a corkscrew rollercoaster) to keep the kids happy all day, plus plenty of sugary snacks to fuel it all. Admission includes unlimited rides.

  4. D

    Big Banana

Some see this as a national icon, others find it ripe for abuse. Admission is free with charges for individual attractions such as the ice skating and snow-slope combo ($16/14). Built in 1964, it actually started the craze for 'Big Things' in Australia (just so you know who to blame or praise).

  5. Puzzling World

A 3-D Great Maze and lots of ‘now-you-see-it, now-you-don’t’ visual tomfoolery to keep kids of all ages bemused, bothered and bewildered. It’s en route to Cromwell, 2km from town.

    Spookers

If walking around an old mental hospital in the dark wasn't scary enough, try it with freaks dripping blood and wielding chainsaws chasing you. Attractions include the Haunted House, the Freaky Forest of Fear, Disturbia and, perhaps freakiest of all, the summer-only Cornevil set in a real corn maze. It's rated R16, but there are some R8 daytime Creepers shows.

Take the Southern Motorway to the Papakura off-ramp (about 32km), turn left and drive 14km towards impending doom.
