    Betty’s Soup Kitchen

An unpretentious retro diner in the Oxford St maw, Betty’s serves a simple menu of soups (d’uh), pies, pastas, stew, bangers and mash, and fish fingers, with a salad bar on the side. Awesome value. We’re not convinced the photo of Betty on the menu is legit – she seems too regal somehow…

  2. B

    Niagara

High ceilings with ornate cornices, oversized tiles underfoot and large wooden booths embellish this gay-/family-/vegetarian-friendly diner. The food is fab too: gourmet burgers, pastas and salads with a twist during the day, scrumptious steaks and fish at night. Monthly dinner-and-show Cabaret Nights are sequin-soaked spectaculars.

  3. C

    New York Restaurant

An astonishing relic between a couple of brothels on a KX back street, the old New York has been steady-as-she-goes since the ’50s. The classic homespun meals here are the cheapest in Sydney: lamb chops, Spanish omelettes or grilled pork and veggies are washed down with 80¢ glasses of milk. The shabby room is either quiet with lonesome old dudes filing through their memories, or exploding with all-in conversation.
