Good Luck
Cuba St’s Chinese opium den, without the opium. This is a slickly run, sultry basement bar playing fresh hip-hop and electronica. It also brings you the thing no one else could: a middle-of-the-mall alfresco lounge – great for watching the Cubacade.

Holy Grail
Closed until further notice.
In a converted art-deco theatre, the raucous Holy Grail is about as subtle as an All Blacks fan’s reaction to a bad refereeing decision. Watch live sport on a huge 10m screen from the indoor grandstand – if you’re watching the Canterbury Crusaders rugby team, wearing red and black is recommended, but not mandatory.

Minus 5° Bar
Everything from the seats to your glass is made of ice. Put on special clothing (including gloves and shoes) and sip a complimentary vodka-based cocktail. You can only stay inside the shimmering ice world for 30 minutes, making it a quick way to blow your cold hard cash.

Murphy's Irish Bar
Less painfully Irish than most of the country's Irish bars, rustic, no-nonsense Murphy's has live music, generally of the foot stompin' and fiddle-playin' variety, on Friday nights. Couches in front of the gas heater are a nice spot to lounge on a cold winter evening.

Tasting Room
In the thick of the action, this Monteith's-sponsored gastropub features clubby décor and leather banquettes (think city-slicker hunting lodge), but it's the antler 'chandelier' that most impressed us. If you're brave, wild game is a feature on the menu.

Rosie O’Grady’s
Siphoning into NZ’s insatiable (and, it has to be said, annoying) passion for Irish pubs, Rosie’s, in the Grand Hotel, is as good a spot as any to elbow down a few pints of Guinness on a misty river afternoon. Good pub meals too.

Paddy Shenanigans
Irish name? Check. Irish beer? Check. Irish crowd? And Czech, German, English, Canadian, Mackay… Hundreds of loose individuals dancing like mice on a wheel and loving it? Check it out; it’s right near Magnum’s.

Crown & Badger
A particularly convincing Brit boozer that does pukka pints of Tennent’s and Guinness, and food along the lines of bangers and mash. Things get lively at the weekends when live bands play.

JJ Murphy & Co
A popular bar in Cuba Mall with outdoor tables. Inside it's all dark-wood booths, big barrels and plenty of pool tables. The classic pub menu is Irish-themed and there's live music Wednesday to Sunday.

Cairns Yacht Club
Patrons here tend to sport a leathery tan and a nautical appearance - think boat shoes without socks. Drinks are extremely well priced, and big meals are turned out of the bistro-style kitchen.

Ponderosa
Ponderosa is a fun, intimate, Wild West-themed cocktail bar (trust us, it's better than it sounds) with tree-stump tables, cowhide cushions and mounted animal heads. Ride 'em cowboy.

Paddy's Shenanigans
A friendly bar, Paddy's occasionally has live fiddles but always has Guinness on tap. There are different drink specials every night and it's always pretty busy.

Dockside
An upmarket, nautically themed restaurant-bar, popular for after-work tie-loosening later in the week (it's nicknamed the 'dry cleaners' on a Friday night, as it's where you come to pick up a suit). Great indoor-outdoor venue with water frontage and quality seafood.
