  2. Pelorus Bridge Scenic Reserve

    Eighteen kilometres west of Havelock is Pelorus Bridge Scenic Reserve, a pretty forest remnant and riverside recreation area. Explore its many tracks, take a dip in the limpid (but chilly) Pelorus River, or indulge in some home-baking at the cafe. Lucky campers can stay overnight in the wonderful DOC campsite, managed by the cafe owners.

  5. Nydia Track

    The Nydia Track (27km, 10 hours) starts at Kaiuma Bay and ends at Duncan Bay (or vice versa). Around halfway is beautiful Nydia Bay, where there’s a DOC campsite and Nydia Lodge, an unhosted 50-bed lodge (four-person minimum). You’ll need water and road transport to complete the journey; Havelock's Blue Moon lodge runs a shuttle to Duncan Bay. On the Track Lodge offers alternative accommodation at Nydia Bay in a tranquil, ecofocused lodge offering everything from packed lunches to evening meals and a hot tub.

  8. Kaikoura Peninsula Walkway

    A foray along this walkway is a must-do if humanly possible. Starting from the town, this three- to four-hour loop heads out to Point Kean, along the cliffs to South Bay, then back to town over the isthmus (or in reverse, of course). En route you’ll see fur seals and red-billed seagull and shearwater (aka mutton bird) colonies. Lookouts and interesting interpretive panels abound. Collect a map at the i-SITE or follow your nose.
