Lonely Planet review
While not exactly the prettiest building in town, this hotel has a fine interior, shady gardens and access to the beach that all make it a popular resort-style hotel. It hosts international bands from September until April and boasts a lively bar.
If anything is 'happening' in Muscat, chances are it is doing so at the 'Intercon', as it is known locally. From Scottish balls and bagpipes to shades and sharp suits at the latest cover show, regular entertainment is featured under swaying coconut palms. During Ramadan the gardens are wreathed in peach-scented hubbly-bubbly smoke, and at New Year revellers of many nationalities gather round the pools for song and dance. A firm favourite with businessmen looking for efficient, no-nonsense accommodation near the main government offices, yet equally popular with local residents looking for a pie and a pint in the friendly bar, the Intercon is beginning to extend its appeal to the holidaymaker. Offering a choice of restaurants from the excellent cocktail-expert Trader Vic's to an international-style daily brunch at the Musandam, you are likely to forget the initial disappointment of the hotel's gloomy exterior.
