Situated on a promontory overlooking Qurm beach, this old favourite has a more relaxed atmosphere than many of the other established hotels, as well as the best sunsets in town. Relaxed and unpretentious, it can be forgiven its rather worn fixtures and fittings.
It may be somewhat past its glory days, but the Crowne Plaza has one asset that its several rivals do not: a sunset and a high place to enjoy it. There isn't much to most Gulf sunsets, as the orb usually descends without a fanfare of clouds, but it is much improved by a lingering reflection in a waveless sea decorated by palm trees. And that is precisely the vista that a sundowner on the terrace at the Crowne Plaza offers. Perched above a beach that runs more or less uninterruptedly from Sohar, two hours or so to the north, the Crowne Plaza acts like a full stop at the end of the plain. That is, it enjoys a sort of splendid isolation from the busy, hot goings on of Qurm below.
