Best Cellars
The team at Best Cellars believe that everybody should drink and enjoy wine as much as they do. They are dedicated to teaching their customers, encouraging them to discover what they like and then giving it to them at affordable prices. Enjoy nightly wine tastings (5pm to 8pm Monday to Friday and 2pm to 4pm Saturday) and prices mostly under $15. Cheers to that. Another store is located in Coolidge Corner in Brookline.

Vieux Carré Wine & Spirits
This is a densely stocked shop run by two Italian-born brothers who can often be found socializing at a table near the front door. It has an impressive selection of wines from California, Australia, France and Italy, and a commendable choice of international beers. If you’re really serious about wine and willing to pay good money for it, ask to see the back room, where the rare vintages are kept.

Sherry-Lehmann
A New York hallmark since 1934, this family-run spot’s founder made a name for himself during the Prohibition. Over the years the place has introduced such high-end spirits as Dom Perignon and Chivas Regal to the US market, and it now offers more than 7000 items from its sprawling space. Expect helpful and knowledgeable staffers, and a bigger selection than you can fathom.

Best Cellars
Arranged by taste categories (juicy, luscious, smooth) rather than by grape or region, Best Cellars reinvents the traditional wine-shopping experience. The prices are affordable (from $9 to $15) and wine and liqueur tastings add to the appeal. In addition to wine, Best Cellars carries spirits – including the artisanal products of Leopold Brothers (try the Absinthe Verte).

Pike & Western Wine Shop
A good selection of regional wine and friendly service make this shop at the northern end of Pike Place Market a great place to get introduced to the wines of the Northwest. In-store wine tastings are open to the public from 4pm to 6pm Wednesdays ($5) and 3pm to 6pm Fridays (free).

Tewksbury & Co
'Colorado's Lifestyle Store' is a real 'man cave' selling hand-rolled cigars (which you can smoke inside!), local wine and fly-fishing trips. The staff is a little surly and the bottle selection is limited, but for a glimpse into the local psyche, it's a worthy stop.

Double Helix
At this wine boutique, exclusive bottles are stacked higher than poker chips on a WSOP final table. Knowledgeable staff escort oeno-philes through the VIP room and proffer champagne flights outside at the tasting bar, which dispenses rare vintages by the glass.

City Cellars
There’s no snobbery at City Cellars, but there are lots of great wines and reasonable prices.
