    Bulerias

A more upscale tapas bar with seaside ambience, outdoor seating and lovely food. Its huge TV tends to show soccer games, and the patio is good for boulevarde watching.

  2. Mundaka

This courtyard hideaway is a svelte escape from Carmel's stuffy 'newly wed and nearly dead' crowd. Take Spanish tapas plates for a spin and sip housemade sangria while DJs or flamenco guitars play.

  3. Ceviche

Panache counts, and Ceviche has it in spades, with its upbeat atmosphere, colorful tiled tables and wrought-iron railings. While you won't think you've stumbled into Madrid, order a pitcher of sangria and a handful of the flavorful, generously portioned tapas and you'll definitely have a good time. This is virtually guaranteed if you end the evening in the Flamenco Room, a sexy, cavernlike bar below with live flamenco music and dancing Thursday and Saturday nights. Every morning (from 8am), the attached cafe Pincho y Pincho dishes up tasty Spanish-influenced breakfasts and espresso coffees.

  4. Kybecca Wine Bar

Kybecca adds verve to Fredericksburg's dining scene, with tasty sharing plates (sherry- braised short ribs, bison-and-blue-cheese sliders, seared tuna) and an excellent beer and wine selection. Sidewalk seating and live music (acoustic) on Thursday through Saturday nights.

  5. There

A popular local caterer opened this hip social alcove for nibbling. East-meets-West in yummy soy paper wraps with asparagus, duck ramen and sashimi tostadas, paired with original cocktails. We liked the jalapeño kiss.

  6. Spirits of Bacchus

This stylish exposed-brick saloon is a favorite Fort Myers watering hole serving a range of fancy tapas, sandwiches and bar food, along with wine and cocktails. Nosh and slosh your way through an evening on the vine-wrapped patio.

  7. B

    Rotten Grape

Enjoy flights of local wines without the fru-fru in the heart of town. If you utter 'tannin, the hobgoblin of pinot' at any point, be quiet and eat some of the tasty tapas (from $10).

  8. Pamplona Tapas Bar

A bit more upscale, this place does a robust trade in excellent Spanish tapas (eg bacon-wrapped dates on a bed of blue cheese; chorizo-stuffed mushrooms) and a fabulous Spanish wine selection (by the glass $6 to $11).

  9. C

    Solera

Curving booths, art deco furnishings and mosaics fill out Solera's three floors, where tapas and sangria (especially when served on the rooftop patio) keep the hipsters flocking in.

  10. Restaurant Rioja

The elderly waiters at this old-fashioned Spanish restaurant dish out authentic paella and a nice selection of well-presented tapas and European favorites like coq au vin (chicken stew with wine).

Novo spins out hit-or-miss Mediterranean, Brazilian and Asian-inspired tapas, with an eye towards freshness and presentation. Pick from dozens of international beers, wines or sakes, and savor the view from creekside decks.

  13. E

    Kona Brewing Company

This hip eatery is known first for its microbrews, like Longboard Lager and Castaway IPA, and then for its local-style pupu (small plates), such as 'ahi appetizers and wood-fired pizzas. Hawai'i Kai is an eastern suburb of Waikiki.

  14. F

    Tango

Kingston's attempt at downtown sophistication is a fresh combustion of DJ beats and tapas treats. Weekends are dominated by the loosened ties and popped collars of local financiers after a long week at the office. Quieter weekdays have discounted tapas and martini options.

  15. G

    Voodoo's

Small tapas-style plates are the thing at this dark and stylish place where black will never go out of fashion. The menu reflects the inventiveness of the kitchen. Expect to be surprised. Enjoy any of a myriad of cocktails at the long bar. On many nights there's live blues or other music.

  16. H

    Gypsy's

This lively tapas bar has an eclectic décor inspired by Spanish artists Miró, Gaudí and Dalí. Make a meal out of the tapas or dig into more substantial main courses like paella or Spanish-style octopus. Live flamenco music after 22:00 on Fridays really gets things going.

    Primitivo Wine Bistro

Primitivo will bring your sexy back. From the sensuous Mediterranean designs to the luscious hot tapas to the thoughtfully paired wines, this rustic wine bar inspires a sultry mood perfect for a romantic rendezvous. Sautéed tiger shrimp, seared scallops and the bacon-wrapped dates may keep you from ever going home.

    Regional

Cuisine from 20 Italian regions can be sampled in a series of small plates, or you can hone in on a particular favorite - pizza from Naples, for example - and get your starters, wine and dessert from that region. The name gives the gimmick away, but Regional is on to a good thing. The pastas - filled with cheese and veggies and/or spicy meats - steal the show.

  19. K

    kittichai

Celebrated for its striking decor - bright red silk curtains against dark, carved walls - and creative menu, Kittichai does tapas (limestone tartlet with minced chicken, marinated monkfish in pandan leaves, and more) and mains (roasted red curry with vegetables, braised short ribs in green curry or a rich seared aged sirloin with fermented black bean and whiskey sauce).

  20. L

    Bar Lola

This authentic Spanish eatery is tucked into a subterranean space on residential Commonwealth Ave. The menu is exclusively tapas, prepared by a team of chefs trained in España. Mural-painted walls and flamenco music create an inviting old-world ambience; the lively, Spanish-speaking crowd and pitchers of sangria add to it. Live flamenco dancing Sundays at 8pm.

    Soñar

Done up with a bit of glitz and a bit of slick, this fantastic tapas bar is perfect for light suppers or evening-long grazing. There's a sidewalk terrace out front if it's warm. Skip the main dishes, the reason to come here is the artfully served tapas. There's a huge range from Portobello mushrooms stuffed with feta and dates to fried calamari and tortillas. The ambience is nightclub minimalism.

    Raku

We love the chicken curry udon noodles here. Our obsession with Raku's noodles may be unique, but everyone else seems to be obsessed with the restaurant itself these days. Where else can you get such a delicious assortment of fresh Asian fusion dishes at reasonable prices? Other menu musts include 'Pan-Asian tapas' and a selection of sushi, salads, fish and meat. How about a green tea martini? There's a second branch in Bethesda.

  24. O

    Boqueria Flatiron

A holy union between Spanish-style tapas and market-fresh fare, Boqueria has wooed the after-work crowd with a brilliant assortment of smooth wines that wash down a selection of small plates showcasing the spectrum of recipes one can whip up using aged cheese, from-the-farm ham and organic vegetables.

    Casa Mono

Another winner from Mario Batali and Chef Andy Nusser, Casa Mono has a great, long bar where you can sit and watch your pez espada a la plancha and gambas al ajillo take a grilling. Or grab one of the wooded tables and nosh on tapas with jerez (sherry) from the bottles lining the walls. For a cheese dessert, hop next door to Bar Jamon, also owned by Batali; you may have to squeeze in – the place is communal and fun.

  26. Q

    Toro

This highly lauded tapas bar is one of many success stories by celebrity chef Ken Oringer. True to its Spanish spirit, the place is bursting with energy, from the open kitchen to the lively bar to the communal butcher-block tables. The menu features simple but sublime tapas – grilled chilies with sea salt, corn on the cob dripping with lemon and butter, and delectable, garlicky shrimp.

For accompaniment, take your pick from rioja, sangria or any number of spiced-up mojitos and margaritas.

    Alta

This gorgeous townhouse highlights the neighborhood’s quaintness, with plenty of exposed brick, wood beams, flickering candles, massive mirrors and romantic fireplace glows. A small-plates menu of encyclopedic proportions cures indecision with the likes of succulent lamb meatballs (butternut-squash foam! Yum!), white-truffle and porcini deviled eggs, warm artichoke salad, fried goat cheese, and blue-crab risotto. The wine list is outstanding, too.
