Portuguese restaurants in North America

  1. A

    Atasca

This is home-cooking like they do in the Azores (which is where your hostess is from). The specialty of the Cerqueira family is the bacalhau de cebolada, salted cod with caramelized onions, roasted red peppers and fried potatoes; but if you like seafood, you'll find something to sate your appetite. The menu also features a wide range of small plates, or petiscos, and a nice selection of Portuguese wines. Enjoy a summer evening on the spacious patio.

  2. B

    Ferreira Café

This warm and inviting restaurant serves some of Montréal’s best Portuguese fare. The cataplana (bouillabaisse-style seafood stew) is magnificent, tender morsels of grilled fish comes to the table cooked to perfection, while meat lovers can feast on rack of lamb or spice-rubbed Angus rib-eye steak. There’s an extensive wine list and a lively atmosphere.

    Bistro le Porto

This is a charming and cozy bistro with rich, flavorful Portuguese cuisine and a fantastic selection of ports. The menu features changing daily specials as well as reliable favorites like cataplana, as well as a baked cod dish, grilled sardines and squid. The waitstaff are friendly and knowledgeable and give great advice about pairing wine with food.

  4. D

    Leão D'ouro

This place has been here for 30 years and, except for the odd hockey game on TV, remains unflappably Portuguese – pretty Portuguese staff, 100% Portuguese wine and a superb Portuguese menu. Try the signature Seafood Rice for two with whole grilled fish ($60), or maybe the Santola à Leão – steamed crab with house special dip ($35).

  5. E

    Coco Rico

People strolling the Main pop into this no-frills Portuguese place all day for piping-hot plates of juicy rotisserie chicken, roasted potatoes and custard tarts. With only one long counter and flimsy bar stools inside, this place always looks empty; most people order their birds to go.

  6. F

    Jano

The scent of charcoal-grilled meats and seafood lingers in the air at this welcoming, family-friendly Portuguese restaurant. The menu features straightforward selections of fresh fish, pork and steak, all grilled to choice tenderness. Warm colors, small tables and a buzzing atmosphere draw in the crowds, particularly on weekends, when waits can be long.
