Carnegie's
This hip and homey split-level pubby place serves the healthiest food in town (eg big fresh salads, homemade soup). There's a good selection of beer and wine too. Friday nights get a little rowdy.

eb's EATS
For 'healthy gourmet' eats, both vegetarians and omnivores will find satisfaction at this casual counter with patio tables. Sandwiches are especially creative, eg oven-roasted turkey with pesto mayo and wild-mushroom meatloaf. Save room for scrumptious baked goodies.

Nutry Vida
For vegetarians growing tired of cheese, this little natural-foods café and bakery is a welcome stop. You'll find salads, yogurts, veggie burgers (which aren't very good, frankly), fresh-squeezed juices and a variety of whole-wheat baked goods. Eat in or take out.

Sano Café
An offshoot both physically and philosophically of the Living Earth food store, this tiny café has a menu featuring healthy fare. Everything, including the meat, is as organic as possible. Eat nori, smoothies, fresh juice combinations, beef and lots of vegan stuff.

Evie's Natural Foods
Evie's Natural Foods stocks health-food staples and some organic produce. Its café (open 09:00 to 18:45) doesn't get rave reviews (especially for service), but health-conscious types will likely enjoy the basic breakfasts, smoothies, sandwiches, salads and hot dishes.

Josie's Restaurant
Organic fare (with its provenance listed on the menu) that satisfies vegans, vegetarians and meat eaters alike has kept Josie's around for more than a decade. Its clean, simple ambience is reflected in the food – steak, salads, gorgeous veggie dishes, but nothing too processed or tortured.

Granny Feelgoods
If you need karmic balance (or just tasty vegetarian fare), try this neighborhood health-food staple. Located next to the courthouse, Granny's must have the highest lawyer-to-bean-sprouts ratio in the USA. Try simple, vegetarian dishes such as tofu sandwiches and spinach lasagna. Carnivores are catered for too – there's a turkey burger.

Bumble Bee's Baja Grill
Drop by this fun spot for healthy, bargain-priced food. Fresh fish tacos (around US$8 for two), chalupa bowls (around US$9), and asparagus burritos (around US$7) are made all the finer with a dash of the smoky roasted tomato salsa, which is a house-special. Groove to live jazz on Saturday nights (18:00-21:00).

O'Keeffe Café
An elegant eatery with shaded patio dining, this fine café boasts an exceptional wine list and exquisite, mostly organic mains like the Colorado lamb chops with a red chile honey glaze. And it's all right next to the O'Keeffe Museum . The café also offers wine tastings and 'Emerging Oenophile' classes.

Cloud Cliff Bakery
Slip on some Birkenstocks and drop by for a stack of groovy blue corn pancakes (around US$6). Rainbow trout wraps (around US$9), organic lamb and quinoa (around US$9), and soups and sandwiches are served alongside organic wines and microbrews. As for side helpings, look for lefty commentary, live music, poetry or lectures.

Kaka'ako Kitchen
Although it's not as ʻono (delicious) as it once was, this takeout joint still serves functional plate-lunch meals with brown rice and organic salad. For a gastronomic edge, order a gourmet plate with crispy sweet-chili chicken or a seared ʻahi sandwich on a taro bun. Daily specials may disappoint. Also at Airport Industrial Park.

Tender Greens
At Culver City’s latest hotspot, lines regularly spill out the door. Exclusive nightclub? Nope, it’s Tender Greens, home of the freshest salads in the city. Order at the bright counter – try ahi tuna niçoise or grilled flatiron steak – and they’ll toss it up as you move down the line. There’s a whiff of salad Nazi in the prep – ‘We don’t recommend substitutions’ – but trust them, they’re that good.

O
Restaurant 100% Natural
Vegetarians and health-food nuts delight at this health-food chain near Avenida Yaxchilán, which serves juice blends (try the ‘Crazy Yog’ or the ‘Vampiro’), a wide selection of yogurt-fruit-vegetable combinations, and brown rice, pasta, fish and chicken dishes. The onsite bakery turns out whole-wheat products, and the entire place is very nicely decorated and landscaped. Service is excellent – at times even too attentive.
