Gourmet restaurants in North America

  1. A

    Bacchanal

One of the best wine and cheese selections in New Orleans sits just across the water from the Lower 9th Ward. Let the folks behind the counter prep your fromage into a work of art, which is devoured in a backyard of overgrown garden green scattered with rusted-out lawn chairs and tatty foldouts. On chef Sundays, cooks from around the city are invited to guest-star in Bacchanal's kitchen and let loose with whatever their talented hearts desire.

    Syzygy

Tucked into a basement on Aspen's restaurant row, this elegant dining room showcases the considerable talents of a local chef who's been feeding Aspen Jazz Festival VIPs for years (through his catering company). Think truffle-and-potato-crusted turbot, elk tenderloin, veal cheek with sweetbreads, and buffalo carpaccio.

Yes, this fine-dining house is for the carnivorous gourmand. Translation: beloved by the AARP set, but still a find.

    Fairway

As well as the Upper West Side branch of this gourmet food store, there is this branch in Harlem and one in Brooklyn (718-694-6868; 480 Van Brunt St, Red Hook, Brooklyn; F, G to Carroll St, transfer to B61). All three have stunning arrays of produce and global goods, but the bigger Harlem spot boasts a 10,000-sq-ft ‘cold room, ’ where you can wear a special jacket to pick out meats, flowers, dairy products and other chilly treats.

    Delachaise

You gotta love Delachaise’s cheese menu – the pictograms that explain ‘stinky’, ‘strong’ etc are very cute. Small plates are wonderful in their own indulgent way, especially the ridiculously over-the-top grilled cheese sandwich, which is apparently assembled from truffled bread and foie gras–infused cheese (that’s a joke, but the thing really does taste that rich).

    Society Café

A slice of reasonably priced culinary heaven in the midst of Encore's loveliness. The basic café here is equal to fine dining at other joints. The sliders are a good appetizer or light meal, and the lobster roll club sandwich makes eating with your hands classy again.

    Fairway - Brooklyn

As well as the Upper West Side and Harlem branches of this gourmet food store, the newest addition, in Brooklyn, has a cafe with stunning Manhattan skyline views. All three stores have stunning arrays of produce and global goods.

    Whole Foods

The city’s premier big-box natural market, part of a fast-growing national chain, is one of six in Manhattan; this one is particularly impressive, like a massive organic-food museum.
