    Capital Q BBQ

A must for Texas-style BBQ lovers, with piled-high portions of smoked meat and plenty o' slaw on the side; try the brisket sandwich. A very casual eating environment, usually packed at lunch with journalists, office workers and other city folk.

  2. B

    Fiorella's Jack Stack Barbeque

KC's own style of BBQ is pit-smoked and slathered with heavily-seasoned vinegar-based sauces. Fiorella's Jack Stack Barbeque in Country Club Plaza is for people who'd rather dress up before dripping sauce on their pants.

  7. F

    The Joint

The Joint’s smoked pork has the olfactory effect of the Sirens’ sweet song, pulling you, the proverbial traveling sailor, off course from your Ithaca into the gnashing rocks of savory meat-induced blissful death. Devour some ribs or pulled pork or brisket, knock it back with sweet tea in the backyard garden and learn to love life (speaking of which, the Joint does a mean peanut butter pie for dessert).

    Redbones

Redbones is usually packed with locals craving barbecue ribs, collard greens and corn bread. Portions are huge, but if you can save room for sweet potato pie you won't regret it. The bar is always bustling, as ice-cold beers stave off the hunger for waiting patrons. There is additional seating downstairs, where quarters are dark, but enlivened by the creepy, colorful wall murals.

    Shorty’s BBQ

If you’re gonna make a mess of yourself, best do it by dribbling some smoky barbecue sauce on the long wooden picnic tables at this South Dade institution. It’s not the best barbecue in the world, but for Texas-style brisket in South Florida, it’s as good as life gets.

    Phillip's Barbecue

The pork and beef ribs are fall-off-the-bone tender and the sauce smokey at this soulful hole-in-the-wall, and we're not whistling Dixie. The latter comes with various degrees of heat, so go easy. The 7-Up cake makes for an unusual finish. Cash only.

  15. El Fogón

  16. L

    Harry's Roadhouse

The attractive setting and elegant cuisine far surpass the prices, and dishes like Moroccan vegetable stew over couscous (around US$9) and turkey meatloaf (around US$9) are overshadowed only by the barbecues and the specials. Excellent stuff.
