    Lion on the Beach

An expansive pub that spills out onto The Beaches sidewalk (lyin' on the beach – geddit?). A respectably long beer list and hearty pub grub (tex-mex, bangers and mash, fried rainbow trout) keeps everyone occupied. Kids run around between people's legs.

    Murphy's on the Green

This classic collegiate tavern is where students and faculty meet over pints of ale (with ten beers on tap) and satisfying pub fare (mains around US$8 to around US$15) served until 22:00. Stained-glass windows and church-pew seating enhance the cozy atmosphere.

  3. Taphouse Grill at Ghent

Good microbrews are served and good local bands jam at this warm little pub.

  4. Bar Gernika

Ongi etorri (welcome) to the Basque block's most accessible pub-tavern with a menu that leans heavily on old-country favorites such as lamb kabob, chorizo and beef tongue (on Saturdays only). It's a true only-in-Boise kind of place.

  5. Blind Tiger

A cozy and atmospheric dive, with stamped tin ceilings, a worn wood bar and good pub grub.

  6. Closed for Business

Charleston's best beer selection and a raucous neighborhood pub vibe.

  7. Foundry

From the vast terrace to the retro-industrial interior, the Foundry is a factory of fun. There's a huge drinks and beer selection plus an ever-intriguing menu of stylish pub vittles. On weekends it seems like half of KC is here, so order two drinks at a time – and two of the oddly addictive soft pretzels.

  8. Happy Gnome

Seventy craft beers flow from the taps, best sipped on the fireplace-warmed outdoor patio. The pub sits across the parking lot from the St Paul Curling Club.

  9. Holy Grale

One of Bardstown's newest and most interesting bars is housed in an old church, with a menu of funked-up pub grub (Scotch quail eggs, kimchee hot dogs) and a dozen rare German, Belgian and Japanese brews on tap.

  10. Jack of the Wood

This Celtic pub is a good place to bond with local 20- and 30-somethings over a bottle of organic ale.

    Whiskey Kitchen

In the Gulch, an up-and-coming patch of rehabbed warehouses adjacent to downtown, this neo-Southern gastropub with a mile-long whiskey menu is one of Nashville's trendiest spots. Expect crowds.

  13. Lou's Beer Garden

We're frankly surprised it took so long for a beer garden to open in Miami. The weather's perfect, right? Nonetheless, this is the first beer garden to open in the Magic City in anyone's memory. Gather around long tables under tropical trees, order a cheese plate or a Kobe beef burger and down pints of Belgian craft ales. What could be better?

  14. Oyster Pub

Perpetually crowded, this sporty pub has a zillion TVs, tons of outdoor seating and all the fresh Gulf oysters you can suck down.

  15. McGuire's Irish Pub

More popular as a restaurant during dinner hours, this ginormous Irish theme park of a pub gets rowdy around 9pm. If you don't sing along with the live music, you'll find yourself up the ladder to kiss the moose. Don't try to pay for your drinks with one of the thousands of dollar bills hanging from the ceiling – a local recently found himself in the slammer that way!

    Marble Brewery Tap Room

With microbrews on tap and an espresso bar, this upstairs place covers both ends of the legal substance spectrum. An outdoor patio overlooks the Plaza, a leather-couched lounge has big flat-screens to watch whatever game is on, and they serve pizza.

    Oak Creek Brewery & Grill

At Tlaquepaque Village, this spacious brewery serves a full menu that includes upmarket pub-style dishes like crab cakes and 'fire-kissed' pizzas.

  18. F

    Beerhive Pub

More than 200 beer choices, including many Utah-local microbrews, are wedged into this downtown storefront bar. Good for drinking and conversation.

  19. G

    Les Trois Brasseurs

This chain of European brewers has set up a great locale in the Quartier Latin. Four homegrown beers are always on tap and the menu has a number of great bistro-style bites. During summertime, sliding garage doors let in the cool night air.

  20. H

    Pub Ste-Élisabeth

Tucked off a side street, this awesome little pub is positively revered by Montrealers for its heavenly vine-covered courtyard and drink menu that includes beers galore, whiskies and ports. It’s got a mind-whirring repertoire of beers on tap, including imports and rare-to-find microbrewery fare like Boréale Noire and Cidre Mystique.

St James's Gate Olde Irish Pub

As Celts pretty much opened up western Canada and gave their name to the town of Banff, it's hardly surprising to find an Irish pub in the park and rather a good one at that. Aside from stout on tap and a healthy selection of malts, St James's offers classic pub grub such as burgers and stew.

  23. J

    Garrison District Ale House

Dim lighting and a leather-and-wood decor make this popular Queen St pub feel like an old-school British hunting club. Preppy crowds munch burgers and sip a wide variety of craft brews.

  24. K

    Heritage Pub & Restaurant

This traditional watering hole is the only live-music venue in town (no cover charge). Local bands play on Friday, and occasionally on Saturday.

  25. L

    King's Head Pub

Vaguely British, the gregarious sidewalk tables are the place to be in the Exchange District on a balmy evening. Inside it's all rough and tumble wood. The long menu does pub standards like burgers and fish and chips quite well.

  26. M

    Lower Deck

A first stop for a real Nova Scotian knee-slapping good time. Think pints in frothy glasses, everyone singing, and live music all spilling out over the sidewalks on summer nights. When someone yells 'sociable!' it's time to raise your glass.

  27. N

    O'Hanlon's

Sharing the same fine patio with Copper Kettle, O'Hanlon's has a grungy Irish pub vibe. There's an excellent array of Irish and British beers and local microbrews on tap. On weekends there's live music which you'll love if you like offshoots of Modest Mouse. Serves food late.
