    Club Extasis

Tijuana's biggest and some say best gay dance club - complete with male strippers and karaoke - is right on the border. It's famous for its male dancers and 'dark room' area where no lights means much more than dancing goes on.

    Caguamamas

Thursday is karaoke nights, and Friday through Sunday it hosts the somewhat legendary Amanda's Show, featuring trávesti (transvestite) performers. It's next door to Club Extasis, right near the border.

  3. C

    Egyptian Room

Portland's main lesbian hangout, where guys are (barely) tolerated and girls are (mostly) butch. It's heavy on the hip hop and full of chain-smokers, with karaoke and pool tables to distract.

  4. D

    Winnie’s

Performing drunken, embarrassing karaoke at this tiny Chinatown dive is a rite of passage for New Yorkers. The red booths are always packed, and the disgusting cocktails are ever potent (eg the Abortion, a mixture of Sambuca and Bailey’s). Sing your lungs out ($1 per song) before a weird karaoke movie screen playing ’80s montages that are certain to be at odds with the Hall & Oates song you chose.

    Brass Monkey

You might need to knock back a couple of brewskis to loosen your nerves before belting out your best J Lo, Justin or Jackson Five at this 1930s bank vault turned kooky karaoke joint. All you American Idol wannabes can pick from 60, 000 songs in six languages. Those in the know usually come early to stake out a good spot before the action starts at 21:00 (16:00 on Friday). Enter through the back.

  6. Bourbon St Pub & 801 Bourbon Bar

Gay nightlife, in many cases, blends into mainstream nightlife, with everybody kind of going everywhere these days. But the backbone of the gay bar scene can be found in a pair of cruisey-type watering holes that sit across the street from one another, Bourbon St Pub and 801 Bourbon Bar (801 Duval St), which can be summed up in five words: drag queen-led karaoke night.

    Tradewinds

A tropical sports bar featuring a daily happy hour from 14:00 to 19:00 and a 24oz 'Big Ass Draft' (the ass-shaped glass is yours to keep). No food, but neighboring mall restaurants deliver for free. Lively fun with darts, karaoke, live bands on weekends and nine TVs. During NFL season, it opens at 07:00 (08:00 when the mainland switches to daylight saving time).

    Karaoke One 7

If you can remember the song name, you can sing it at Karaoke One 7, which has more than 800,000 titles (and that includes songs in French, Spanish and Tagalog). Join the happy mix of Japanese businessmen, overstimulated NYU students and after-work corporate types blowing off steam. There's a limited bar menu, but you can also bring in food from outside.

    Alley Cat Lounge

Part owned by Boston Celtic Paul Pierce, the Alley Cat might be faux-sophisticated in the ways you'd expect a populist nightclub to be, but they've got a pretty sweet karaoke setup complete with music videos and a captive audience who won't run away from you since the line outside is probably too long to bother renavigating.

    Karaoke Club

Just walk in and join the party. Choose from over 15,000 songs and have your performance immortalized on DVD. If you’re lucky, amateur impressionists will be doing their thing; if not, you can always walk inside the casino to see the Imperial Palace’s ‘dealertainers.’

    Edgar's Bar

For a taste of Old Mazatlán grab a tequila or two at this crusty old bar, a mainstay since 1949. Friendly old men sing karaoke beneath vintage photographs, and giant shrimp are brought to your table in buckets. According to the sign on the door, women are welcome.

  13. K

    Lillian’s Music Store

The crowd’s a little older than in the clubs along University, so they appreciate that elegant stained-glass partition and the 3ft-tall gorilla at the entrance. The barbershop seats are inspired and who can resist test-driving what must be the state’s largest urinal?

  14. L

    Les Deux Pierrots

This club has been serenading an adoring public for over three decades. Québec singers encourage you to join in sing-alongs of heart-on-your-sleeve chansons in thick dialect. The lyrics waft out over the rear terrace in summer.

    Mary's

Head upstairs to the ratty couch if you want to sit and talk at Mary's, a scruffy-chic East Atlanta dive. But the action is downstairs, a narrow space with room for a bar and a campy karaoke night known, naturally, as Mary-oke.

    Rob's Good Times Grill

The atmosphere might be a little hokey, but a young, energetic crowd comes out to boogie to a live DJ Thursday through Saturday. Sunday through Tuesday is karaoke and Wednesday is…country line dancing (yeehaw!).

  17. O

    Iggy’s

How much you love this skinny Irish-lite pub depends on how badly you need to misbehave in the Upper East Side. The karaoke mic certainly helps the raucous regulars, who bring on a bit of a frat atmosphere some nights.

The city's raucous gay and lesbian hang-out, Prism Lounge hosts nightly events, including drag fests, karaoke evenings and bear rendezvous. The Friday and Saturday night dance parties are its main attraction.

  19. Don Pepe’s

This is an old standby, popular with the mellow set and karaoke masters. Come here to hang out, talk, watch the plaza or catch live music if it happens to be on.

  20. Tipper’s

A raucous, smoky bar, with a funky-weird vibe where you can dance to live bands every night, or simply enjoy a cocktail with no door charge.

Open mic on Wednesday, karaoke on Thursday, and rock and roll booming across its dancefloor on Friday and Saturday.
