  1. A

    Cobalt

Cobalt pretty much rules the roost of the DC club scene. The music is great, the bartenders are ripped and sufficiently shirtless and the scene is equal parts all about the hook-up and getting down to some good (if pounding) dance music. Honestly, this place is such an epitome of a gay club it ought to come with its own five-piece costume ensemble of an Indian, a cop, a motorcycle rider etc. If you’re in the mood for that sort of thing, this is pretty much a guaranteed good time.

    Score

Muscle boys with mustaches, glistening six-packs gyrating on stage, and a crowd of men who’ve decided shirts really aren’t their thing: do we need to spell out the orientation of Score’s customer base? It’s still the best dedicated gay bar on the beach, and the addition of the more mature Crème Lounge upstairs will undoubtedly raise the cachet of this perennial favorite.

    Bourbon St Pub

Gay nightlife, in many cases, blends into mainstream nightlife, with everybody kind of going everywhere these days. But the backbone of the gay bar scene can be found in a pair of cruisey-type watering holes that sit across the street from one another, Bourbon St Pub and 801 Bourbon Bar, which can be summed up in five words: drag queen–led karaoke night.

    Apex

One of the crown jewels of the gay P St dance-club scene, Apex brings out the college kids and buff boys in droves, especially on Friday. Apex is a meat market and everyone here knows it, so it’s pretty fun for those just wanting to dance and those looking to cruise in about equal measure.

    Piranha

The gay universe of the Fruit Loop orbits Sin City’s sexiest gay nightclub, decked out with fireplace patios, aquariums and waterfalls, plus the luxurious 8½ Ultra Lounge. Expect outrageous theme parties, drag cabarets, and ladies-only and Latin nights.

  7. G

    Neighbours

Referred to on one occasion as a ‘big, soulless, cha cha palace,’ Neighbours is ostensibly a gay disco but attracts a varied crowd – even newbie suburbanites come in for its weekly ‘80s night (Thursdays, at press time).

    Club Boi

Club Boi is a good place for folks seeking a little ‘color’ (it’s the only black-owned gay club in Miami and attracts a huge African-American, Latino and lesbian crowd).

    Coliseum

Even the Miami boys make the trip here for the dance parties held at Coliseum, especially on Saturdays, when circuit DJs such as Monty Q and Brett Henrichsen blow in for gigs.

This gay hangout has serious staying power and a little bit of something for everyone (except the religious right), including dancing, drag shows and go-go dancers.

    Club Café

For a glossy gay dance club, stop in this Boston mainstay where you can admire the fellas as you all listen to the Madonna dance remix of the moment. They must import their bartenders from a place that animates Greek statuary. Wednesday is karaoke night, while Sunday is reserved for a public viewing of The L Word.

    O-Zone

O-Zone is wildly popular but a little more sedate than the thumpa-thumpa-hey-what’s-your-sign Sobe scene.

    Aqua

For a peppy scene that includes dancing and occasional drag shows, men and women should head to Aqua.
