    Blue Gin

When it opened a few years back it attracted the likes of Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn (in town to shoot the popular movie The Wedding Crashers), instantly putting this trendy cocktail lounge at the top of Washington's hot list. Its residential location, however, means pretty strict conditions liquor-wise and no one under 25 is allowed. As a result the crowd here is more mellow, less worried about the scene than at some of DC's other hip spots.

This doesn't mean Blue Gin isn't a good place for singles; it is. There are two levels. We like upstairs best - it has lots of good-for-sinking couches, plenty of funky sculptures and two bars. If it's crowded, however, getting pa…

    Anchor Tavern

Even by Alaskan standards, drinking in Nome is legendary. Among the early bar owners was Wyatt Earp, the noted gunslinger at the OK Corral. All but two of the bars are clustered around one another on Front St. For a quiet hangout where you can sit and chat with locals, try Anchor Tavern, which has a good selection of beer on tap.

    Economy Shoe Shop

This has been the 'it' place to drink and people-watch in Halifax for a decade. On weekend nights actors and journalists figure heavily in the crush. It's a pleasant place for afternoon drinks but note that this is one of the more expensive establishments in town. The kitchen dishes out tapas until last call.

    Brazen Bean

Located in a antique Victorian house, this very popular bar is known for its martinis - more than 25 different kinds. During happy hour (5pm to 8pm weekdays) the prize drinks are $4 and service slows to molasses.

    LuLu's

No problem finding LuLu's - you can hear this boisterous place a mile away. Ultracasual, it's got a kitsch-cluttered bar where drinks flow freely and the music rocks from Wednesday to Saturday nights.

    Dome

Dubbed the 'Liquordome,' with four venues under one roof. 'The Attic' has live music; the others are nightclubs open until 03:00. It's a bit of a meat market and a favorite for heavy drinkers.

    Savage Beagle

Those hovering around the 30-something mark will likely prefer Savage Beagle to Whistler's other nightclubs. It's on two levels, so you can have a sit down if you exert yourself too much.

    Kangas Sauna

If you're looking to be pampered you've come to the wrong place. Think BYOB, as in 'bring your own bathing suit.' Well, actually, beer works too - Friday night at Kangas is a well-established social event. The saunas are private and can be hired for up to five hours, so go it alone, or grab a 'conference room' for you and your 'associates.'

Even if you're not in the mood to get steamy, Kangas has other amenities that might pique your interest: a public hot tub, a delicious dining area, tanning booths and even a hair salon.
