The Calling
This is a small but swanky reinvention of the neighborhood bar idea – think silky hardwood floors, mod furnishings and black-clad waiters – where the main draw is the slender covered patio overlooking English Bay, perfect for sunsets and storm-watching. It serves gourmet grub such as smoky bacon and gorgonzola burgers, and the drinks menu includes plenty of European beers, a smattering of wine classics and a roster of serious cocktails.

Flying Saucer Draught Emporium
You definitely won’t go thirsty: the bar inside this old brick building is made for craft-beer-lovers (80 brews on tap). How can you not love a bar whose jam-packed patio is called ‘Half-Acre Hell?’ The waitresses slinging beers in Catholic-schoolgirl outfits are kinda weird, but hey, this is a funky old place that flips the bird to political correctness – if the old-fashioned cigarette machine is any indication.

Rathskeller
Quaff German brews at the outdoor beer garden's picnic tables in summer, or at the deer-head-lined indoor beer hall once winter strikes. The six-beer sampler gets you acquainted with the wares. It is located in the historic Athenaeum building near Mass Ave.

Slippery Noodle Inn
Downtown's Noodle is the oldest bar in the state, and has seen action as a whorehouse, slaughterhouse, gangster hangout and Underground Railroad station; currently, it's one of the best blues clubs in the country. There's live music nightly, and it's cheap.

Castlebay
An Oirish pub located downtown run by a true blue Dubliner. There should be no doubt about what you are entering into behind these doors; plenty of green white and gold, lilting music and chewy stout. A packed, popular place with a seafood menu to boot.

Reynold's Tavern
This beautifully maintained hotel restaurant and bar resides in a proud Georgian building that has seen use as a library, boarding house and hat shop. The cellar level Sly Fox Pub has a ye olde world feel and leans toward a 'reserved' clientelle.

TapWerks
Bad at making decisions? Then don't come here. This comfy place in Bricktown serves over 150 bottled beers and has another 100 on tap. The food's not bad either and there's live music on weekends.

Ale House
This multileveled joint boasts the cheapest draughts in town, and if you're not into beer, its milkshake brings all the boys to the yard. Frequent live music draws in swarms of students too.

Old Monk
The dimly lit patio on a starry night! The perfect cheese plate! The Belgian beers! We’ll admit it – this is one of our favorite pubs in Texas.
