    Aqua Sports office is around 8km from downtown going toward the beach, runs an established scuba-diving operation with quality boats that offers dives on nearby reefs or Isla de Lobos, as well as fishing trips (M$800 to M$1000 per hour). Visibility is best between May and August, and from January to March you can fish for giant tarpon. Camping on the island (with all provisions provided) can be arranged with advance notice.

  3. Underworld Scuba

    Snorkeling, diving, surfing and deep-sea fishing are all popular around the bay. The scuba diving in Manzanillo can be spectacular, and there are many sites to explore – either off the beach or out on the bay. Try Underworld Scuba. Its complete PADI dive center charges M$1100 for two-tank dives, including equipment, or M$4500 for PADI certification.

    Diving Locker

    A long-established favorite with local snorkelers and scuba divers, the Diving Locker is not just for experienced practitioners. Along with its regular series of PADI training courses, there's a great introductory course ($75, including equipment) for first-timers. There are also specialist kids courses for aquatically inclined youngsters.

    Aventuras Xcalak to Chinchorro Dive Center, about 300m north of town on the coast road, offers dive and snorkel trips to the wondrous barrier reef just offshore, and to Banco Chinchorro. It also rents diving equipment and offers PADI open-water certificates, NAUI and SDI instruction, as well as fishing and birding tours.

    Equipment rentals and courses are part of the mix here, but the center also organizes regular trips around the region that can take you to revered dive sites on the Sunshine Coast and off Vancouver Island – treks to the sunken HMCS Cape Breton near Nanaimo are especially recommended.

    Of the various PADI dive schools in the city, Dorado Buceo is a good choice. It has quality equipment and arranges diving and snorkel excursions from the Veracruz area. Guides speak English.

    The Club Cozumel Caribe has underwater cement statuary that makes for some interesting snorkeling. It has a decent beach and pool, and, at the time of research, you didn’t need to pay anything to get in. You will need to fork over some cash, however, to don snorkel gear (M$50) or test your mettle on the rock-climbing wall (M$350). It also has a snack bar.
