    Why just imagine what the pioneers felt like? Hop on a horse and you can enjoy the same feel and smells. In Banff the most popular routes lie south of Bow River. Holidays on Horseback operates out of the Trail Rider Store and offers a variety of horse-riding trips around the region. Among the choices: an hour-long ride along Spray River and a three-hour Bow Valley Loop. Much longer multiday camping adventures in the backcountry are available.

  2. Horseback Rides to El Quemado

    Ride 'em cowboy! Numerous trails lead out into the dry, stark and fascinating desertscapes - hilly and flat - around Real. The most popular guided trail ride is the three-hour trip to El Quemado, the sacred mountain of the Huichol. Here you'll find expansive views of the high-desert plateau and a small shrine to the sun god.

    Horse guides now belong to a union, approved by the municipality; if unsure, ask for a guide's credentials. The aim of the union is to standardize prices and safety. Note that no protective hats are provided; you clomp off at your own risk.

    Enjoy the canyon country on horseback with this Mexican-American joint enterprise, from two-hour jaunts near Creel (M$150 per person) to two-week treks far, wide and deep (M$21,000 to M$26,000). Tuition is available for beginners. Its stables are on the southeast edge of town.
