The World of Filters
Blog: Kiva Stories from the Field - 9 September 2010
By Dan Tulchin, KF12, Nicaragua Living in the developed world, we become accustomed to convenient filters that give us what we want, sidestepping some unpleasant truths. Meat is a delicious hamburger with fixings in a toasty bun, for example, and not the carcass at the neighborhood carnicería with flies swarming around it. Clean, potable water is just a slight turn of the wrist away while disposing of waste requires tossing garbage bags on the street or pushing down ever so firmly on the toilet lever.

Shoeshine<<<—>>>Lustrado
Blog: Nicaragua Tourist - 24 August 2010
You can get a shoeshine in about any park in Nicaragua for pretty cheap. It’s better than paying $7 in an airport in the U.S. This one, in the park in Chinandega, Nicaragua, cost me C$10 (<$0.50). Before and after…. Podés conseguir que te lustren los zapatos bien barato en casi cualquier parque en Nicaragua. [...]

Pupusas in Chinandega
Blog: Nicaragua Tourist - 21 August 2010
Pupusas are an original from El Salvador. However, since Chinandega, Nicaragua, located in the northwest part of the country, is somewhat close to El Salvador (by water or by land) there is a crossover of food. In the central park, you will find a ‘Pupusería’ where you can get these thick tortillas filled with pork, [...]

Who says only the U.S. has superheroes? (Well, perdon me Mexico – you have the Chapulín Colorado and Nacho Libre). [...]

Up the Creek...
Blog: Joe's Trippin' - 20 August 2010
There's just something exotic about having to boat your way up river to reach a destination, where the highways are the waterways. I don't mean taking a boat as an alternative method like along the Nile, but instead as the only method, like in central Borneo.

Nicaragua’s Caribbean Coast – Sociolinguist’s Paradise, Electrician’s Nightmare
Blog: Kiva Stories from the Field - 18 August 2010
By Dan Tulchin, KF12, Nicaragua What do Miskito, Rama, Garifuna, Spanish, Creole, and English have in common? Well, nothing really, besides the fact that you can hear all of them within a block in Bluefields, on the Caribbean coast of Nicaragua – a place where international organizations and tourists rarely venture. While a number of these languages are, in essence, subsets of others, I am hard pressed to come up with another place of such linguistic variety (no, Times Square doesn't count).

Blog: Around The World On The Toilet - 18 August 2010
Since being back home and settling into somewhat of a normal existence we have been busy planning our next long haul. Wedged Between Volcanoes, Surrounded by Water. Fun?
Blog: Joe's Trippin' - 16 August 2010
Ahhhh... nothing beats a magnificent hourglass figure, two glorious mounds of steamy goodness all wet and ready for those brave enough to take it all on. And if you can throw in a howler monkey or two, it makes for quite an adventure.

Not that Granada, the Other One
Blog: Joe's Trippin' - 15 August 2010
A quick Google for a place called Granada, is likely to turn up a couple dozen cities, towns, provinces and other such geographic designations all throughout Spain and the Americas. But if travelling to Nicaragua in Central America, there is no question to which Granada people are referring.

Man, oh Managua
Blog: Joe's Trippin' - 11 August 2010
I guess one could get caught in a trap of capital prejudiced. That is to say after visiting (or just hearing about) the capital cities in Central America, one might think they're all the same.

Gettin' Stranded in Esteli
Blog: Joe's Trippin' - 6 August 2010
OK, I admit it. I am a stubborn independent traveller. I never look up recommended restaurants in the guide books. I rarely stay in the popular youth hostels. And i almost never get on the spiffy tourist buses to get from A to B. I prefer the challenge of local buses.

Blog: Lost World Expedition - 24 July 2010
By time we had made it through our hellish day of Honduras, it was pretty late at night. At the Nicaraguan border they told us there was a hotel just a few miles down the road, so we drove on with our one headlamp, and pulled into the first hotel that we found. When we [...]
